Teeth whitening in Gunadala, Vijayawada starts with a question that many salons and kits skip: are your teeth healthy enough for it? Gel on a cavity or exposed root is a good way to get a sharp, unpleasant surprise. At GIA Clinics Gunadala, Dr Sreeja Lakshmi checks first and whitens second.
Why the check comes first
At your first visit, the dentist looks for decay, gum problems and old fillings, and records your current shade so that you can see the change. A scale and polish then removes surface stains and tartar, which lets the gel work evenly. For some people, the cleaning alone makes enough of a difference.
Two ways to whiten
In the clinic. A barrier goes over your gums and lips, then the peroxide-based gel is applied in short rounds, sometimes with a light. The shade is checked as we go. It takes about an hour and no injection is needed.
Take-home trays. Trays made for your teeth let you whiten gradually, usually over one to two weeks. Some patients use them alone, others to top up after a clinic session.
What whitening will not do
It works on natural enamel. These will need something else:
- Crowns, veneers and fillings keep their colour
- Grey or dark stains from medicines may not respond
- A dark tooth that has lost its nerve may need other treatment
When that is the case, you will hear it at the check-up rather than after the session. Veneers or cosmetic dentistry may be a better route.
Comfort and aftercare
Some temporary sensitivity is common and tends to settle within a day or two. For the first day or two afterwards, your dentist will tell you which foods and drinks to avoid. Results fade gradually, since tea, coffee, paan and smoking stain teeth again over time.
Whitening is usually postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so please let us know. Sensitive teeth or exposed roots are also worth mentioning before you begin.
