Anyone needing jaw fracture treatment in Vijayawada should first make sure the rest of the injury is safe. A blow strong enough to break a jaw can also hurt the head and neck. So the first rule is simple: check for danger, then get the jaw seen. At GIA Clinics, jaw and facial injuries are treated by Dr Sai Santosh, whose fellowship training is in cranio-maxillofacial trauma.
Go to a hospital emergency department first if
- There was loss of consciousness, vomiting or confusion
- You have trouble breathing, or bleeding that will not stop
- There is a possible neck injury
- You have other serious injuries from an accident
GIA Clinics is not an emergency hospital. Once you are stable, facial repair can be planned, and you can ask the hospital team about involving a maxillofacial surgeon.
Signs the jaw may be broken
- Your teeth no longer meet the way they did
- Pain on biting or opening your mouth
- Swelling, bruising or numbness of the lip or chin
- A step or gap you can feel along the jaw
- Loose or broken teeth after the injury
While you are getting help
Support the jaw gently with your hand or a bandage, and hold a cold pack to the swelling. Stick to liquids, and do not try to force your bite back into place. Keep any knocked-out teeth and bring them with you.
How a jaw fracture is assessed
Dr Sai examines your face, jaws and bite and listens to how the injury happened. An OPG X-ray is taken in-house, with a CT scan arranged when more detail is needed.
How it is treated
That depends on where the break is and how far the bone has moved. Some simple fractures with a good bite can be managed without an operation, using a soft diet and close review. Others need surgery to line up the bone and hold it with small plates and screws, and this larger work is planned in a hospital setting. The main aim is to restore your bite, because the jaw must heal in the right position.
Reviews check your wounds, bite and healing, and old fractures that healed out of position can sometimes be corrected later.
