Much of the TMJ treatment in Gurunanak Colony, Vijayawada that we plan comes back to one habit: grinding or clenching the teeth, often in your sleep. Many people have no idea they do it, until a partner hears it or a dentist notices the wear. At GIA Clinics on Club Road, Dr Sai Santosh looks at the joint, the muscles and the teeth together, because this habit affects all three.
Clues that you may be grinding
- A sore or tired jaw when you wake up
- Morning headaches around the temples
- Flattened, chipped or sensitive teeth
- Tender muscles in the cheeks
- A partner who hears the noise at night
What grinding does to the joint
Your jaw muscles are strong. Hours of clenching overload them and put pressure on the small disc that cushions the joint. The result can be pain, clicking or a jaw that tires easily. Stress often plays a part, and so do arthritis or an old injury, so grinding is not always the whole story.
How a splint helps
A splint is a custom-fitted plastic guard worn over your upper or lower teeth, usually at night. It does not cure the habit. It does spread the load, protect your teeth from wear and help the muscles relax. Your bite is recorded first, the splint is fitted for you, and it is then adjusted at follow-up visits so it sits evenly.
Getting the most from it
- Wear it as advised, and bring it to your reviews
- Clean it with a soft brush, and keep it in its case
- Tell us if your bite feels different, or if the pain gets worse
- Combine it with the jaw exercises you are given
Reducing daytime clenching
Set a reminder on your phone to check your jaw during the day. Lips together, teeth apart. Ease off caffeine late in the day, and try a relaxation routine before sleep.
If a splint is not enough
Physiotherapy may be added. For joint problems that persist, Dr Sai may discuss TMJ arthrocentesis, arthroscopy or surgery, in selected cases. Worn or broken teeth can be repaired by our dentists once the grinding is under control.
