TMJ Treatment in Vijayawada

Treatment room at GIA Clinics Gurunanak Colony

Most TMJ treatment in Vijayawada, as anywhere, should begin with the simplest thing that might work. The temporomandibular joint links your jawbone to your skull, and problems with it range from an occasional click to a jaw that locks. Only a small share of patients ever need an operation. At GIA Clinics, Dr Sai Santosh finds the cause first, then moves up a ladder of treatment only as far as you need.

When to get it checked

Occasional clicking without pain may not need treatment. Persistent pain, restricted mouth opening, recurrent locking or difficulty chewing should all be assessed by a specialist. Headaches, facial pain and ear discomfort with no obvious ear problem can also come from the joint.

Finding the cause

Dr Sai examines how your jaw moves, how your teeth meet and which muscles are tender. Imaging is arranged if it would help. Common causes include teeth grinding and clenching, arthritis, injury and a displaced disc inside the joint. Often several of these act together.

The treatment ladder

Step 1: Home care. Softer foods, a warm or cold pack, gentle stretching and avoiding very wide yawns. Stress and posture matter too.

Step 2: Physiotherapy and medicines. Guided exercises improve movement and relax tight muscles. Medicines may be prescribed for a limited time.

Step 3: Splint therapy. A custom plastic guard fits over your teeth and helps reduce clenching and grinding pressure on the joint.

Step 4: TMJ arthrocentesis. The joint is rinsed through fine needles, which can help when the jaw is painful or restricted.

Step 5: Arthroscopy or surgery. In selected cases that have not responded, keyhole or open procedures on the joint may be considered.

Why this order matters

Each step carries more commitment than the last. Many people find relief at the lower steps. Surgery is reserved for those with a clear reason, and Dr Sai, as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, can explain honestly whether you are one of them.

If your jaw locks

A jaw stuck open or closed should be seen promptly. Do not force it. Call the clinic for advice, and go to a hospital if you are unable to swallow or breathe comfortably.

Questions

Common questions.

Will my TMJ problem go away by itself?

Mild problems often settle with simple care. Pain that persists, or a jaw that locks or limits opening, should be assessed.

Will I need surgery for TMJ pain?

Most people do not. Surgery is kept for selected cases that have not responded to other treatment.

Is a night guard the same as a TMJ splint?

Both fit over your teeth. Yours is made and adjusted for your bite and your diagnosis, so a shop-bought guard is not the same thing.

Should I see a dentist or a surgeon for jaw pain?

Either can start the assessment. For persistent pain or locking, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon can offer the full range of treatment.
