An FUE hair transplant in Vijayawada follows the same basic idea as anywhere else: healthy follicles are moved, one at a time, from the back and sides of your scalp to thinning or bald areas. FUE stands for follicular unit extraction. Knowing what happens hour by hour and month by month takes much of the worry out of it, so that is what this page sets out.
How FUE works
Each follicle is lifted out with a fine punch, rather than removing a strip of scalp. The tiny marks left in the donor area heal as small dots. The follicles are then placed one by one into tiny openings at the planned angle and direction, because that is what makes the finished hair lie naturally.
On procedure day
- The hairline and graft plan agreed earlier are marked out
- The donor area is numbed with local anaesthesia
- Follicles are extracted with the fine punch
- The recipient area is numbed and the openings are made
- Follicles are implanted one at a time
You stay awake throughout and can take breaks. Dr Sai Santosh carries out the procedure.
The first days afterwards
Some redness, swelling or mild discomfort can occur. A first wash and a check usually follow on day two or three, and you will be told how to sleep, wash and protect the grafts.
Your growth timeline
The first weeks. The transplanted hairs may shed. This is commonly known as shock loss and does not necessarily mean the transplant has failed, because the follicle stays under the surface.
Months 3 to 4. New hair usually begins to show.
Months 9 to 12. Fuller results often appear by this point, though growth is gradual and differs from person to person. Regular reviews track your progress.
Who suits FUE
Men with pattern loss at the hairline or crown, and women with thinning in specific areas once the cause has been checked, may be suitable. So may people with stable loss and enough donor hair. Under about 25, hair loss may still be changing. Diabetes, high blood pressure, blood thinners or a tendency to form keloids should be mentioned first.
