Not every third molar has to go, which is the first thing to know about wisdom tooth removal in Vijayawada or anywhere else. Some grow in straight, can be cleaned and cause no trouble for life. Others sit trapped under gum or bone and quietly damage the tooth in front. Telling the two apart takes an examination and an X-ray, and that is where care at GIA Clinics begins.
Signs a wisdom tooth needs attention
- Pain or swelling right at the back of the jaw
- Gum infection that keeps coming back over a part-erupted tooth
- Decay in a tooth your brush cannot reach
- An impacted tooth pressing on its neighbour
Teeth that can often stay
A healthy tooth that has come through fully, bites properly and is easy to clean can usually be left alone and watched at check-ups. If someone suggests removing all four without showing you why, it is reasonable to ask to see the X-ray.
How removal is done
Dr Sai Santosh, our oral and maxillofacial surgeon, assesses the tooth with an OPG X-ray that shows its position, its roots and the nearby nerve. He explains whether removal is needed and how it would be done. On the day, the area is numbed with local anaesthesia. The procedure usually takes 20 to 60 minutes, depending on how the tooth lies. An impacted tooth may need a small cut in the gum and dissolving stitches.
Recovery you can plan around
Swelling and soreness for a few days are common, and full recovery usually takes three to seven days. Most people return to work within a day or two. You go home with written instructions on bleeding, swelling, food and medicines, and a review about a week later checks the healing.
Tell us about these first
Mention blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, diabetes, heart conditions, bone-strengthening medicines or pregnancy. Numbness or tingling in the lip or chin before surgery is also important to report.
